Middlesex County Jail is one of the largest single-site county correctional facilities in the United States, holding up to 7,000 inmates daily and admitting up 86,000 pre-trial detainees each year. Middlesex County Jail sits on a 92-acre land with 11 divisions, 3 onsite Sheriff’s departments, a health services facility, 4 education departments, a dayroom, and privatized food service and Middlesex County Jail commissary. Middlesex County Jail was constructed in 1881. By then, the Middlesex County Jail served less than 78 residents. Later in 1917, the population in Middlesex County County had grown, and so did crime rates.
