The Wise County County Department of Corrections, through the Sheriff of Wise County County, operates the Wise County Jail in Decatur, Decatur, Texas. Wise County Jail is one of the largest single-site county correctional facilities in the United States, holding up to 5,000 inmates daily and admitting up 109,000 pre-trial detainees each year. Wise County Jail sits on a 96-acre land with 10 divisions, 5 onsite Sheriff’s departments, a health services facility, 3 education departments, a dayroom, and privatized food service and Wise County Jail commissary. Wise County Jail was constructed in 1859. By then, the Wise County Jail served less than 80 residents. Later in 1903, the population in Wise County County had grown, and so did crime rates.
